WICHITA, KAN. —

Clevin Hannah scored 24 points, J.T. Durley added a career-high 20 and Wichita State upset No. 16 Texas Tech 85-83 on Saturday night, giving the Red Raiders their first loss of the season.

Garrett Stutz added 13 points off the bench for the Shockers (10-1), who finished 28 of 35 (80 percent) from the foul line and out-rebounded Tech 40-35.

Texas Tech trailed 35-21 at halftime, but John Roberson scored five points during a 10-4 run to open the second half and the Red Raiders (9-1) slowly whittled into the lead. D’Walyn Roberts brook loose for a layup and converted the three-point play with 8:24 left, making it 53-53.

The Red Raiders took their first lead in more than 20 minutes on David Tairu’s jumper, and they pushed the lead to 61-57 on Roberson’s 3-pointer and a free throw by Mike Singletary.

Durley missed a foul shot at the other end and Wichita State grabbed the rebound. Stutz went to the line moments later and made the first of two shots, and another offensive rebound led to Hannah’s tying 3-pointer

One possession later, Hannah buried a baseline 3-pointer, Stutz followed with two more free throws 22 seconds later, and Wichita State suddenly led 66-61.

The Red Raiders cut the lead to one possession twice in the final 30 seconds, but Graham Hatch and Hannah answered with free throws. Tairu’s turnaround 3 with a second remaining made it 85-83, but the Shockers threw the inbound pass to the far end of the court to seal the win.

Roberson scored 24 points before fouling out for Texas Tech. Nick Okorie added 16 points, Singletary finished with 13 and Tairu had 11.

A grudge-match pace was established early, and neither team made a field goal in the first 4 minutes. Wichita State could not find much offense outside of Durley for most of the first half, and he scored nine of the Shockers’ first 11 points.

The real trouble for both teams in the first half was turnovers — each had 11. Singletary had six of those, including two during a 12-1 run that pushed Wichita State’s lead to 21-14 with 5:16 left in the half.

Texas Tech closed within 21-18 on Tairu’s stickback, but the Shockers closed the half with a 14-3 run that included 3-pointers from Durley and Hannah. On its final possession of the half, Hatch airballed a 3-pointer that went to Durley for an easy layup, giving him 14 points.

Missouri State 73, Saint Louis 63

ST. LOUIS — Adam Leanard and Jermaine Mallett had 15 points each to lead four Missouri State players in double figures as the Bears topped Saint Louis 73-63 Saturday night.

Kyle Weems had 11 points for Missouri State (10-0), and Will Creekmore added 10.

Willie Reed had a game-high 19 points to lead Saint Louis (7-4). Christian Salecich and Justin Jordan added 15 points each for the Billikens. Salecich had three 3-pointers, and Jordan hit 8 of 10 free throws.

The Bears outrebounded Saint Louis 35-28.

Missouri State led 33-28 at halftime and built a lead as high as 13 points, 51-38, by the midpoint of the second half. Relying on two 3-pointers by Salecich and one by Jordan, the Billikens came as close as 53-49 with 7:20 to play.

But the Bears used an 8-0 run to build a 61-49 cushion with 4½ minutes left and Saint Louis never got closer than seven points.

Indiana State 55, Toledo 54

TOLEDO, Ohio — Jake Kelly scored on a jumper with 7 seconds left to lift Indiana State to a 55-54 victory over Toledo on Saturday night.

Kelly’s jumper capped a rally from a 54-49 hole with 1:07 left as the Sycamores held the Rockets scoreless during that stretch.

Kelly, who finished with 10 points, made two free throws to cut the lead to 54-51 with 58 seconds left and Carl Richard hit a layup to trim the margin to 54-53 with 37 seconds remaining. Toledo’s Jordan Dressler missed two free throws with 27 seconds left.

Indiana State (7-3) scored one basket in a stretch that lasted for nearly 8 minutes of the second half.

Dwayne Lathan scored 11 points to lead Indiana State. Jake Barnett led Toledo (4-8) with 20 points and Mouhamed Lo added 12.

The Sycamores played without starting guard Harry Marshall, who was suspended for a violation of team rules and didn’t make the trip.

Northern Iowa 64, North Dakota 41

GRAND FORkS, N.D. Reserve guard Marc Sonnen scored a career-high 21 points on seven 3-point shots to lead Northern Iowa to a 64-41 victory over North Dakota on Saturday.

Sonnen was 7 for 8 from behind the arc. Northern Iowa made 14 3-pointers.

Ali Farokhmanesh added 10 points for the Panthers (8-1). Coach Ben Jacobson, returning to his alma mater, led his team to its seventh consecutive victory.

Chris Clausen scored 10 points to lead North Dakota (1-11), which lost its seventh straight.

Drake 71, Iowa 67

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Matt Gatens scored 18 points and Anthony Tucker added 17 as Iowa beat Drake 71-67 Saturday night.

Gatens also had nine rebounds and five assists for the Hawkeyes (4-7), who avoided being swept by their three instate rivals for the first time.

Iowa took control with a 12-4 run to open the second half, turning a one-point deficit into a 43-36 lead. Drake pulled within 67-65 with 36 seconds left, but the Hawkeyes held off the Bulldogs down the stretch to pick up their first close win of the year.

Seth VanDeest had 15 points and Josh Young added 13 for Drake, which had its first winning streak of the season snapped at three games. The Bulldogs (5-6) hit nine 3s in the first half but shot just 2 of 11 from beyond the arc after that.

Iowa coach Todd Lickliter was back on the sidelines after missing three games because of surgery to repair a tear in his carotid artery.

Drake slowly chipped away at Iowa’s lead, pulling within 64-59 with 3:33 left. VanDeest then followed a 3-point play with a turnaround floater in the paint to make it 66-64 with 1:15 left.

VanDeest then hit just 1 of 2 free throws, keeping Iowa’s lead at 67-65 with 36.3 seconds left. Iowa’s Eric May and Drake’s Craig Stanley traded free throws, but the Hawkeyes nearly coughed up the ball in transition before Gatens grabbed it and went to the line with 12.6 seconds left.

Gatens calmly hit both free throws to make it 71-67, and Josh Young’s long 3 bounced off the rim.

May added 13 points for the Hawkeyes, who had 16 assists and just eight turnovers.

The Hawkeyes were behind for most of the first half, but Gatens buried a pair of 3s to key a 12-4 run that gave Iowa a 43-36 lead with 15:59 left. Drake briefly pulled within 47-45, but the Hawkeyes pushed their lead back to seven, 52-45, on Devan Bawinkel’s 3 with just under 10 minutes left.

Gatens then hit a 3 from the wing to make it 57-47 with 8:10 to go.

Gatens, a sophomore who is expected to be the leader of the inexperienced Hawkeyes, looks to have finally snapped out of an early season shooting funk. Gatens scored 18 points against Northern Iowa, had 20 in a loss at Iowa State and shot 5 of 8 against the Bulldogs.

Iowa trailed 32-26 late in the first half but scored five straight points to pull within 32-31 by the break. Drake was 9 of 17 from 3-point range in the first half, and six different Bulldogs hit 3s in the first 20 minutes.

For once, Iowa and Drake were able to face opponents who are as young as they are.

The Hawkeyes have three true freshmen in their rotation, including starters Cully Payne and Brennan Cougill, and junior forward Jarryd Cole is their only player who’s been with the program more than two seasons.

The Bulldogs, who also started a pair of freshmen in VanDeest and Ben Simons, have their youngest roster since when they had the nation’s least experienced team in 1990-91.

Ten Drake players are in their first year with the program, including transfer Ryan Wedel.

Iowa’s three previous wins, over Bowling Green, North Carolina Central and Prairie View A&M, had all been by at least 10 points.

Illinois State 73, Utah 63

SALT LAKE CITY  — Osiris Eldridge and Lloyd Phillips each scored 17 points to lead Illinois State over Utah 73-63 on Saturday.

The Redbirds (8-2) led from start to finish. When the Utes cut the margin to 50-45 on Luka Drca’s 3-pointer, Eldridge hit a jumper and added a couple of free throws to raise the lead back to 9 and the Utes never got within fewer than 7 points the rest of the way.

Austin Hill scored 12 and Dinma Odiakosa added 10 as the Redbirds returned to their winning ways. Illinois State won its first seven games before losing to Niagara and Ohio.

Kim Tillie led Utah (5-6) with 19 points and Carlon Brown scored 15. Drca had 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Utes, who were playing without forward Jay Watkins, sidelined with an abdominal strain.

New Mexico 66, Creighton 61

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  — Darington Hobson had 22 points and 16 rebounds, and No. 19 New Mexico rallied from its biggest deficit of the season to beat Creighton 66-61 on Saturday night.

The Blue Jays jumped to a 31-15 lead and shot 71.4 percent from the field in the first half, taking a 40-28 lead into the break. But the Lobos (12-0) opened the second half with a 17-4 run, taking their first lead at 45-44 on Hobson’s putback with 11:47 left.

The teams traded the lead until Hobson’s layup broke a 57-57 tie. Dairese Gary helped seal the victory with two steals in the final minute.

P’Allen Stinnett led the Bluejays (4-6) with 14 points.

Roman Martinez added 11 points and 10 rebounds for New Mexico, which struggled from the field all night. The Lobos finished 20 of 67 from the floor, including 3 of 15 on 3-pointers in the first half.

Martinez had one of the game’s bigger plays with about a minute left. After Hobson missed two foul shots, Martinez slipped underneath, grabbed the rebound and quickly fed it back to Hobson for a dunk to increase the lead to 61-57.

The play was indicative of how the Lobos came back. They had a 22-7 advantage on the offensive glass, and the Bluejays committed 18 turnovers to five for New Mexico.

Southern Illinois 70, San Diego 68

LAS VEGAS  —
Carlton Fay hit two free throws with 2.5 seconds left, capping an improbable 13-point rally in the closing minutes Saturday as Southern Illinois beat San Diego 70-68 at the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic.

The Salukis (6-2) trailed 68-57 with 3:43 remaining before hitting three consecutive 3-pointers — two from Justin Bocot — and adding four free throws to close out the come-from-behind victory.

With the score tied at 68, San Diego (5-7) missed a go-ahead shot attempt and Fay was fouled on the rebound, sending him to the line for the game-winning points.

San Diego did not hit a field goal over the final seven minutes, and was just 4 for 24 from the field in the second half.

Bocot finished with 22 points and Kevin Dillard had 17 for Southern Illinois.

Brandon Johnson led San Diego with 15 points. Roberto Mafra and Clinton Houston added 13 each.

Evansville 84, Tennessee-Martin 63

EVANSVILLE, Ind. —
James Haarsma’s fourth double-double of the season paced Evansville to an 84-63 victory over Tennessee-Martin on Saturday night.

Haarsman had 18 points and 14 rebounds as the Purple Aces overcame the individual effort of Benzor Simmons, who had 35 points and 10 rebounds for the Skyhawks (1-8). Simmons made 11 of 18 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, and 11 of 12 free throws.

The game was tied 30-30 at halftime, but Evansville used runs of 10-1 and 13-4 to go ahead 64-44, putting it out of reach.

Bryan Bouchie scored 18 for Evansville (6-3), and Troy Taylor had an odd double-double of 10 assists and 10 rebounds. Denver Holmes and Colt Ryan chipped in with 12 apiece.

The Skyhawks shot just 29.3 percent and were outrebounded 49-30.

No one besides Simmons scored more than seven points for the Skyhawks, who were coming off a seven-day layoff.
